Scripture to Live By:
Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.
Colossians 3:12-15
Recipe Post:
My son and his family are coming to visit this weekend. When my grown up children come to visit, I always ask them what meals they would like for me to fix. My son said he would like Cabbage Rolls for one of the meals.
I have made Cabbage Rolls for many years. I used to cook them on the stove top, but many times I would end up burning the cabbage, that touched the bottom of the pan. Baking them alleviates this problem.
Printable Recipe
If you would like to make them, this is what you will need:
1 1/2 pounds of ground beef (I used ground chicken breast)
12 cabbage leaves (One large head)
1 cup Minute rice
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
2 24 ounce jars of Italian spaghetti sauce
1 cup of Italian seasoned bread crumbs
1 egg
1/2 cup of chopped onions
Honey to taste (approx 1 to 2 teaspoons) Optional
I made five times this recipe and I will freeze part of them to have when my daughter and her family come to visit.
The first thing you do is blanch your cabbage. I do this by putting the cabbage in a pot, covering it with water and bring it to a boil. Cook it until the cabbage is translucent.
While the cabbage is cooking, combine all other ingredients in a large bowl. (Use only 1/2 jar of spaghetti sauce in the mixture.
When cabbage is somewhat translucent remove cabbage from pot and drain. Cut the leaves close to the core of the cabbage, loosening the leaves, as shown below. Trim veins on cabbage leaves.
Divide you mixture into twelve balls equally. Shape mixture into oblong balls and place in the center of each cabbage leaf. Then begin to roll the cabbage to the inside as seen below.
Roll leaves up and place in a 9 x 13 dish.
Pour the remaining spaghetti sauce over the rolls. Then cover dish with aluminum foil.
Bake at 350 for 1 hour. Makes 12 servings.
Remove from the oven and cool slightly before serving.
I like to serve the cabbage rolls with Calico Beans and potato salad.
If you like a lot of sauce with your cabbage roll you can add more spaghetti sauce or you can make a sauce to go on them that is more like the original Cabbage Rolls.
(Add after cooked as a side dish. Your 9 x 13 dish will boil over is to much sauce is added while cooking.)
The recipe for this is as follows.
1 teaspoon of honey
1 Tablespoon of corn starch
1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice
1 can of tomato soup
1 can of water
Mix the above ingredients and cook until it starts to boil. Pour the sauce over the cabbage rolls.
My family really enjoys Cabbage Rolls Italian Style. Hope you will try them.
Blessings,
