Scripture to Live By:
Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:12-17
Home Improvement & Organizational Post:
I am always looking for more space to store things. My husband says I can put ten pounds of whatever in a five pound. He told me that he was paying me a compliment. So I guess that was what I was hoping to do in the new space I found to work with.
We have little space in our kitchen that has a door on it and when you open the door there is the back of our furnace. This little room doesn’t serve a purposes other than resetting the furnace. The working parts of the furnace has another entrance to it.
When we bought this house we saw that the former owners had put some shelves on one side of the wall but had used the rest of the little room to put brooms and etc in it.
I had purchased a shelving hanger to hang on the door of this room which gave me a little extra space to store items, but as you can see the shelves are cluttered with little room.
Yet as you can see below the rest of the room was empty except for things I had placed in the floor.
I kept looking at this room and thought of all the wasted space.
We decided to put shelves on the opposite wall as well.
Doubling our space by doing so and getting the clutter off the floor in this room.
First step was to empty out the room.
After every thing was out of the room I discovered how badly it needed repainted. I repainted the shelves and the walls where needed.
The carpet in this room needed to be replaced. It was glued down and under that was some broken pieces of linoleum. That needed to come up as well.
A bigger job than we anticipated. We got as much off the floor underneath as we could and cleaned it. Then we put new carpet down in it to match our dining room.
Trimmed around every thing that needed it.
Re-install the newly painted door jam.
Now we were ready to start putting the shelving in. Then we discovered that putting the shelving up we require a little bit more work than we had thought. We used a stud finder to see where to mount the brackets and discovered that there was one 2 x 4 that was approximately 3/4 across the wall and the other 2 x 4 was in the corner behind the door facing and protruding out about an inch which can be seen in the picture below making it impossible for me to mount a bracket. Therefore we needed to add support boards on the outside of the wall and attach the one to the 2 x 4 that was protruding out from the door facing and add another one to the board behind the wall to make the brackets and shelves to be equal.
I needed it to come out further in order to mount the wall bracket and to give the boards strength not only to hold the brackets but to make them sturdy enough to hold whatever would be put on the shelves, so I mounted 1 X 3’s over each 2 X 4’s before mounting the brackets.
I laid out where I wanted the screws to go. I put them 12 inches apart.
I then drilled the mounting holes in the 1 X 3s.
Next I counter sunk the mounting holes so the screw heads would go into the board leaving the surface of the board smooth.
Now the boards were ready to be mounted, this would reinforce the corner 2 X 4 and make it easier to install the bracket.
Mounting the other 1 X 3 over the 2 X 4 that is inside the wall.
Uprights mounted.
Painting the uprights.
We found a lot of shelving brackets and supports in the top of the garage. We decided to use these instead of spending a lot of money. We cleaned them up and the only thing we had to purchase was the 2 six foot shelving boards. Which my husband cut into six shelves. This gave me twice the storage as I had before and made it much more handy.
Next we mounted the wall brackets on our 1 X 3 inch boards
Install the shelf brackets and check to see if they are level.
Install the shelves.
Time to rearrange and organize shelves.
There is room between the shelves on the left and right walls for me to go in the room to get things off the shelves. It doesn’t look like it in the pictures but there is approximately 12 inches between the shelves.
I really enjoy having this space to store large bowls some paper products, crock pots, electric skillets and various miscellaneous items. So if you have closet or a furnace room that has wasted space perhaps you can use it for shelves to store larger items. I know I am glad to have double the storage capability of this room with wasted space. Clean and tidy to look at. Hope I can keep it this way.
Blessings,
