Numbers, numbers, numbers, numbers everywhere, how did they all begin? According to the account found in the Bible, Genesis 1:5-2:3 we learn that God created, all that he created, in six days and rested the seventh day. Numbers must have began with God.
There are so many passages of Scripture that deal with numbers. One book in the Bible is named “Numbers.” Here God is numbering the children of Israel and all their families.
Numbers are very important in our world, and they have been since the beginning of time. We have numbers of days in a year, a month, a week, we have social security numbers, number of states in our United States, number of counties within each state, number of senators, and representatives both on the federal and state levels. There are stock market numbers, oil price numbers, telephone numbers, zip code numbers, time clock numbers and the list goes on and on. We even have to take a number sometimes as we wait in line in the stores.
However, when we moved a few months ago, we did not have a street sign or a house number.
People who tried to come see us struggled to find our house. So my daughter and I went to the county court house and told them our plight and asked for one. We were told that they could make us a street sign, but if we wanted it put up in the near future, we would have to put it up ourselves. They made us the street sign, and we brought it home. We had our first experience of digging a hole with post hole-diggers and mixing and pouring concrete to stabilize the sign in the ground, but we did it. (A great accomplishment for us.) Later my husband made an arrow with our house number on it to show the direction of our house. It wasn’t long before most of the streets around us had street signs.
But still our house did not have numbers. My husband and I decided to make our own house number plaque so it would show up on our brick home. We wanted to fancy it up a bit so we added a flower hanging pot to it. We were able to make two of them for less than fifteen dollars. We wanted to place one on each side of our garage door. We were pleased with how it turned out and thought we would share how we did it with you in case you would like to try it.
Here is what you do:
Cut a 1×6 board 18 inches long as shown below.
Cut a short 45 degree angle on each corner as seen in the photo above.
Drilled holes in each end to screw it to the wall.
I bought a hanging flower pot at the dollar store, which we cut in half.
You will need a 1″ x 12″ x 12″ board for the back of the flower pot.
Once cut, turn it to look like a diamond. This is the angle you will use to mount your flower pot.
To make the seat for your pot follow the directions below.
Use a compass to lay out the half circle. Make your half circle 2 3/4 inch radius. Sand rough edges off and attach it to one corner of your 1x12x12 inch board as shown in the picture. Using 3 number 10×3/4inch stainless steel sheet metal screws with 3 larger flat washers, screw the plastic flower pot to the half circle from inside the pot.
Measuring down 2 inches from the peak, mark it and then draw a line to show where you will cut the tip off by cutting straight across, as shown in the picture below. (The reason for this step is to place the flower hanger closer to the number plaque.)
Seal the inside of the pot with paintable caulking. Drill two holes in your hanger to secure hanger to your wall. (Place one hole at the top of your hanger and one at the bottom.)
Now you are ready to paint your flower hanger.
Prime and Spray paint your plaque whatever color you would like.
Nail the numbers to the plaque (nails came with the numbers).
Now you are ready to mount your new house numbers and flower hanger.
If being attached to brick you will need a masonry drill to make your holes and then put plastic inserts in the holes that your screws will go in to secure them.
Attach flower hanger in the same way directly below the number plaque as shown below.
Fill your pot with flowers of your choice. (Put small amount of gravel or a plastic aerator in bottom of pot before putting flowers in for drainage, or drill a few small holes all the way through your pot and shelf.)
Now your House Number Flower Hanger is complete and you never have to be concerned with people knowing whether they are at the right house. I think this hanger adds beauty to any home decor. Are you ready to try it? Hope you will.
Blessings,
