Scripture to Live By:
Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
My husband and I have a bed in our sun room and we love to sleep out in the sun room because we can look at the great outdoor around us. We have a television on the wall above our bed and in order to see it while we lay in the bed we would lay at the foot of our bed to watch TV then turn around to sleep because our pillows kept falling off the foot of the bed, because there was nothing to keep them on the bed. My husband and I began to think about what we could do to make a headboard for our bed but not have it look like a head board yet serve the purpose of the headboard.
Here is what we came up with and it serves more of a purpose than a headboard, It serves as Mini Office for me.
We purchased 3 wall cabinets:
1 30 x 36 inch unfinished oak cabinet
2 12 x 36 inch unfinished oak cabinets.
We first removed the doors and the hardware.
Then we sanded all the cabinets frame work and doors.
We used number 220 sand paper to do this.
After we got them all sanded, we stained them using a soft rag and Golden Oak Min wax stain.
After the stain dried, I put the first of three coats of Minwax Polycrylic protective finish on the doors and the frame work.
When the first coat of Minwax Polycrylic protective finish dries, you lightly sand it before adding each additional coat.
Then we made a frame for the cabinets to sit on. We used 2 x 4’s to do the frame work. We made framework extend beyond the cabinet itself, one and one
quarter inch around the entire perimeter of the cabinets.
We turned all three cabinets on their side to get the height we needed to hide the bed from the rest of the room. The cabinets are 36 high and and 54 inch long. Since we turned the cabinets 90 degrees we needed to move the hinges 90 degrees to make the doors open horizonially on the two 12 inch cabinets and we needed to turn one door on the 36 inch cabinet 180 degrees so that both doors opened the same direction.
All cabinets were clamped them screwed together. Making the three cabinets one unit. This unit was screwed to the floor base that we had made.
Shelves had to be made to fit the inside of the 12 inch by 36 inch cabinets. The 30 x 36 inch cabinet needed more shelves so we bought some finished shelving board to make them out of it. New holes needed to be drilled for the new shelves to rest on, and we added shelf brackets.
In order to make the door sturdy enough to use as a desk for my laptop computer we put one half of a hasp with chains, as seen below.
Leveled the door shelf.
Now ready to check out my computer shelf.
Added the shelf in the cabinet.
We had purchased rounded unfinished boards for the top of the cabinets. They only came in 4 foot lengths so we purchased two of them and cut off the needed length. We bolted and wood glued them together to make one piece, then sanded, stained, and polycryliced it as we had done the cabinets.
It also needed to be wider than the board we had purchased so we added the needed width.
We made sure it would fit the cabinet the way we wanted.
Next we sanded, stained and Polycrylic it.
Next we cut the oak veneer. which is 3/16 of an inch thick for the sides and back of the cabinets. Then we sanded, stained and polycryliced the side and back pieces and attach it to the cabinets with finishing nails.
Next we drilled a hole in the back of the cabinet to run all electric wiring through to the inside of the cabinet.
Project almost finished.
We also plugged all the screw holes with little wooden screw hole covers.
Now you have a nice piece of furniture to look at, as well as useful, as a headboard and an office.
The cabinet provide a lot of storage space for my mini office.
I wanted you to see that there is a bed behind the cabinet. It makes a great head board and a wonderful mini desk that I can watch TV as I scroll the internet. or work on my blog.
Here is what it looks like from the bed side.
It certainly serves its purposes well. We are so pleased with it. Hope you like it as well.
