Scripture to Live By:
After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!”
John 6:1-14
Recipe Post:
We had Vacation Bible School last week at our church. We worked with the two to four year old age group. One of the Bible truths that was taught was on Jesus feeding the 5,000 with the 5 barley loaves and two small fish. I made these mini loaves of bread and took “5 little loaves” to use in the telling of the story. The children enjoyed the story and holding the little loaves of bread. I passed out several of the other loaves to different people that were working in Vacation Bible School. Each person received them with a small and thought it was a good object lesson to make the story come alive.
I like the little loaves because they have more crust and I can slice each loaf into five slices and cover them with honey cinnamon butter. So yummy! So if you would like to make them, here is what you will need:
3 Wilton mini loaf pans
2 Tablespoons dry yeast
1/2 cup warm water
2 teaspoons sugar
3/4 cups melted shortening or oil
1 cup warm water
1 cup milk (I used almond milk)
2 teaspoons salt
2 eggs, beaten
3/4 cup sugar
7 cups of flour ( maybe a little more)
Combine 2 Tablespoons dry yeast; 1/2 cup warm water and 2 teaspoons sugar in your mixer bowl.Let mixture set for 4 to 5 minutes. While the yeast mixture is setting measure out 3/4 cups melted shortening or oil; 1 cup warm water; 1 cup milk (I used almond milk); 2 teaspoons salt and 3/4 cup sugar. Beat 2 eggs in a separate bowl.
Pour all of the above into your mixing bowl with the yeast mixture in it.
Then measure out 7 cups of flour.
Using the dough hook on mixer, knead dough.
(Or mix and knead with hands, if you don’t have dough hook for mixer.)
Mix until it pulls away from the sides on the bowl,as seen below.
(If it doesn’t pull away from the sides, add a small amount of flour until it does, )
Cover and let raise until it looks like this. (Approximately 45 minutes to an hour)
Divide dough into 27 pieces. Spray the mini pans with cooking spray.
Fill the mini pan with the pieces.
(If you don’t have three mini pans then you could put them in cup cake tins.)
Cover and let raise until it doubles in size, as seen below.
(I let mine raise approximately 1 1/2 hours)
Bake at 375 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes or until they are golden brown.
Remove from oven and let cool on a cooling rack.
The bread is good with plain butter.
But as I said, I really like honey cinnamon butter on mine. This is how I make it:
Mix 1/2 cup of butter or margarine
1/4 cup of honey and 1 teaspoon cinnamon until smooth.
I can only imagine what the bread tasted like, in the hands of Jesus, as he multiplied it to feed 5000. How about you?
Blessings,
