Scripture to Live By:
O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
Thanksgiving is just a few days away. We enjoyed our annual Thanksgiving dinner with church family and friends last night. There was so much food. If anyone left hungry, it wasn’t because there was not enough food. There were various cakes and pies, actually there was two tables with nothing but desserts. There was also two tables full of traditional Thanksgiving recipes.
I decided to make a cake with praying hands and a reference to 1 Corinthians 15:57 which reads, “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” I am so very thankful for the victories God has given me in my own life. This cake served fifty people.
I enjoy cooking for others. Perhaps you do as well. So if you are interested in making this cake just follow the instructions below. You will need the following:
3 cake mixes
1 1/4 cups of oil
Follow the directions on the boxes of cake mix.
Preheat oven at 350 degrees. I used a 12 x 18 inch cake pan. Grease and flour the pan and set aside.
I used 2 yellow cake mixes and one chocolate. I mixed up two yellow cake mixes, according to the directions on the cake mix boxes, and poured into the prepared pan. Next, I mixed up one chocolate cake mix according to directions on the box and poured it over the yellow cake mixes and using a spoon swirled it into the yellow cake mixes. (Avoid scrapping the bottom of cake pan you are baking the cake in as you swirl the mixture, if you do it might make it difficult for the cake to come out of the pan later.)
Bake according to direction on box. ( I bake mine approximately 30 minutes or until it is golden brown and bounces back when gently tapped.) Remove from oven and cool approximately 5 minutes in the pan. Then trim the top of the cake off using the rim of the pan as your guide. This will make the top of the cake flat.
Flip the cake onto the serving dishes with the cut top down. Cool completely before frosting.
Butter Cream frosting recipe.
(You will need to double this recipe to frost this size cake )
1 recipe of frosting takes
4 cups of powdered sugar
1 cup of Crisco
1 cup of margarine
1/3 cup of evaporated milk
2 teaspoons of vanilla
Mix together and beat at high speed for 7-10 minutes
Frost the cake and then add borders. Use tip # 32 for the borders. As shown below.
Make the colors up that you want to use to make your flowers and leaves. I used fall colors to decorate this cake. Making a mum type flower.
To make the flowers, fill pastry bag with frosting and put the tip #87 on the couplet and secure it with the couplet nut. I cut pieces of wax paper and use the squares to make my flower on so I can put them in the freezer. Underneath the wax paper is a flower nail that you hold in one hand and the nail makes it possible for you to twist the flower around as you make it.
(After I make my flowers I place them in the freezer. Let them freeze and put them on the cake from the freezer so they are easier to work with.)
I purchased the praying hands at Easter time when they had them in the stores.
You could buy a praying hand candy mold and make your own.
I placed the hand in the center of the cake.
I wrote “Give Thank” above the hands, centering the writing.
Next I place flowers in the left top corner and work my way down one side of the cake.
Next I placed flowers down the other side of the cake and piped the leaves.
Then I added the Bible verse reference.
Now it is completed. Ready to serve.
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
A Thanksgiving tradition we observe at our home each year is to write down what we are thankful for and share it as we sit around the table. Do you have any Thanksgiving traditions you observe at your home each year? We have so very much to be thankful for, my desire is to express daily my gratitude to God and not take his blessings for granted. We can certainly make a joyful noise unto the Lord this Thanksgiving day.
Blessing to each of you.
From our house to yours,
