DIY Spice Cabinet Organization

Organization Post:

I have an abundance of spices.  I had them in kitchen cabinets and sometimes I would look hard and long to find what I was looking for because they were in the cabinet one behind each other and would become disorganized so quickly when trying to find what I was looking for.  I needed a cabinet with enough space that I could line them in rows single file, unless I had more than one of the same spice. I needed a cabinet with several shelves with different heights.  We decided to use  a cabinet we had purchased at a Kraft Maid sale several years ago.  We  purchased addition white shelving that were three feet long to add more shelves to the cabinet. We cut the shelves to needed size. 

We remove all the shelves and measured our entire inside height and then we measured the different size spice bottles so we would know what distance we would need between shelves.  We then measured the inside of the cabinet and then divided the height into the shelf distances needed.  See photos below.  

We then drilled the holes for the shelf placement by cutting a piece of wood the distance needed for each shelf.  This way the holes would be in the same place in front to back and side to side.  

We removed the doors so it would be easier to drill the holes.  Especially those that are in the area of the door hinge.  

We purchased shelf holders and placed them in the holes for the particular shelf distance needed.

With the bottom shelf in place.  We would measure the distance for the next shelf and drill the holes and then follow the step above to put shelf holders and shelf in place.  

Instead of 2 shelves, I now have 4, which now gives me 5 shelves to place spices on according to size.  

Next we put the doors and knobs back on the cabinet.

Now it is time to organize the spices by sorting the bottles by size. Next place like size bottles on each shelf.

Alphabetize each shelf  according to spice name.

This works well.  If I have more than on of the same kind, I put it behind the one that is showing.  When one is used up, a fresh one will be behind it.  I can see all the spices without moving them around to see what is behind the other.  This is a real time saver and each spice is very accessible. This is a very good way to keep your spices organized.
