Scripture to Live By:
That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Romans 10:9-13
Frugal Tip Post:
My husband had a heart attack several years ago and since that time we have been trying to eat healthier. We decided to cut back on red meat and to eat healthier meats with less fat.
Today, I went shopping at Walmart and I thought I would look at lean ground beef that was 93% lean. It cost 4.78 a pound and a 4 ounce serving had 8 grams of fat. I looked at white ground turkey and it was 97% lean and it cost $4.98 a pound. It had 3 grams of fat for a 4 ounce serving. I looked at the boneless skinless chicken breast. It was on sale for $1.88 a pound and for a 4 ounce serving there was 2 grams of fat. It was a $2.90 savings per pound on the ground beef and a $3.10 savings over the white ground turkey.
It only made sense to me to buy the boneless skinless chicken breast, which is less fat and much greater savings. Even though it wasn’t ground up it was the healthier choice and a better buy.
I have been buying the boneless skinless chicken breast for some time and grinding it myself to use in place of ground beef. I use it to make meat loaf, meat balls, taco meat, use it in spaghetti sauce, party meat pies, and many other recipes. Anything I would use ground beef in, I substitute ground chicken ground from chicken breast.
Here is how I make ground chicken.
I have a Kitchen Aid Mixer with an attachment that grinds up meat and vegetables.
I also use an electric skillet to catch the ground meat as it comes out of the meat grinder.
This prevents getting the meat on anything but the skillet.
I am grinding large amounts of meat so I need a larger pan to catch it.
Today I bought three packages of boneless skinless chicken breasts that totaled
eleven and a half pounds. Cost $1.88 a pound totaling $20.68.
It only takes about 10 minutes to grind 11 pounds of chicken. It is worth the savings. If I had purchased the White Ground Turkey it would have cost $4.98 x11 = $54.78. The ground beef would have cost $4.78 x 11 = $52.58. The cost of the Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast was $1.88 x11 =$20.68 The savings by grinding your own meat is over $30.00. That is quite a savings!
Before I start to grind the chicken breast I like to cut it in smaller strips,
so it will go through the grinder easier.
I place chicken in a 9 X 13 dish as I cut it up. This size of dish holds 11 lbs of chicken breast.
Now the chicken is ready to grind.
Place the chicken in the top of the meat grinder and push it down with the wooden plunger
After I get it all ground up I divide it into 1 pound packages. Label and date it.
I pat the packages flat and stack them so they are easier to organize in the freezer,
and they thaw faster when you are ready to use them.
Then freeze it to use as needed.
With the remainder of the meat I have in the skillet, I am making taco salad for dinner.
What is left of the taco meat, I will freeze to use at a later date.
Ah, it is ready to eat, won’t you join me?
Looks yummy! Can’t wait to enjoy it.
Most of the time I do not pay over $1.99 for boneless skinless chicken breast. Sometimes I get it for $1.77 or as today $1.88. It is cheaper than ground turkey or ground beef and has less fat than both.
It has been many years since we have eaten ground beef and we are very content with the change.
Hope you will give it a try. For us it is a better choice. You can’t beat the amount of money you can save by simply grinding it up yourself.
Blessings,
