A few years ago my daughter told me about a cake that a friend had brought to her house for a Cottage Koinonia, that our local church held, one Sunday evening, of each month.
Before we go on talking about the cake, you might be asking, “What in the world is a Cottage Koinonia anyway?”
If you were to ask me, I would answer, that the primary meaning of the word “koinonia” is fellowship, sharing in common or communion. This word appears 20 times in the Bible according to the “Got Answers.org”. It is a Greek word that is found in the book of Acts, chapter 2 and verse 42, it says,“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship (koinonia), to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
Philippians 2:1-2 states, “If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship (koinonia) with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.”
So a Cottage Koinonia is a meeting in the homes (cottage) of individual believers to have Christian fellowship, to love, encourage and to share your faith. This fellowship is being in agreement with one another, serving with each other in a united purpose. This “koinonia”, with each other is based upon our fellowship with Jesus Christ.
I hope that explains what was happening at my daughter’s house when her friend brought the Heath Bar cake.
As she told me about the cake, my mouth watered, and I decided I wanted to make it. It contains Heath candy bars, which is a favorite of many, in my family. Even though it has candy bars in it, the angel food cake itself, doesn’t have any fat and the cool whip doesn’t have much fat, especially if you use the lite or the non fat brands. It also, has hot fudge topping in it, but you can get the low fat brand as well.
My daughter told me that our local thrift store had Heath Bars for $1.00 for four packages of six so I scurried down there to pick up some of them, looking forward to the day I could make my own Heath Bar Cake.
I had only made an angel food cake one other time, but the price of angel food cakes in the stores I shop at run anywhere from $3.98-5.98, so, I decided it was time that I should try making another one. I got out my 10″ Angel food cake pan and purchased a box of Betty Crocker Angel Food cake mix.
I set out to make my Heath Bar Cake.
If you would like to make one for yourself here is a list of the things you will need and the instructions of how to make it.
What you will need:
Angel Food cake mix or purchase one already made.
10″ sponge cake pan
1 jar of Hot Fudge Ice Cream Topping
1 package of Heath Bars crushed or you can buy the Heath Bars already in pieces. (I crush my Heath Bars ahead of time or while the cake is baking.) Buy 2 extra Heath Bars to decorate with.
2 tubs of Cool Whip (regular, lite or fat free)
Save the 2 extra Heath Bars – do not crush them. Also save out a small amount of your hot fudge to drizzle over the top of your cake.
If you are making your cake from a mix bake cake according to the directions on the box.
The pan I own, the bottom and center piece are separate from the sides of the pan, so when the cake is done, I can lift the cake out of the pan, and let it cool. If you do not have a pan like mine, follow the directions on the box to remove from pan. When cooled completely, you can put in the freezer to let it freeze slightly before you cut it into three layers. (I like to do this because I think it cuts nicer.) You can also, cut it without putting it in the freezer using a serrated knife.
I cut this cake without freezing it and I wasn’t able to slice it as well as I could have if I had frozen it.
After you get your cake sliced into three layers, set it aside until you make your filling.
Mix your crushed Hearth Bar Candy, Cool Whip and Hot Fudge Topping (I put the jar of hot fudge in the microwave for about 45 seconds)
After you have the filling mixed well, spread some between the two bottom layers as seen below.
Put the top layer on and frost the cake with the remainder of the cool whip topping mixture, as seen below. (I moved the cake from the counter top to the table, so, I can work around it better to frost.) I also filled the hole of the cake with the Cool Whip mixture to have a little extra for each piece of cake.
When you have finished frosting the cake, decorate the outside edges of the cake
with the remainder of the Heath Bar crumbs.
I cut up 2 Heath Bars into four pieces each and placed them randomly on top of the cake.
Next I put some of the hot fudge is a cake decorating tube with a writing tip #3 and drizzled the hot fudge on top of the cake as shown.
Your cake is ready to serve to your family, friends or guests. It looks like it took you a long time to make, but in reality, it took only a short time. It is delicious, and a treat for anyone.
I am ready to share it with you.
Blessings,

Angel food cakes offer so many possibilities and they are one of my favorite cakes. I often make the one that most WW members know about. I Angel Cake mix, with a 20 oz. can crushed pineapple..DO NOT DRAIN pineapple. Mix according to directions and put in an angel food cake pan or even 9×13 pan or make cupcakes out of it. Yummy but I'd love to try this but since Heath bar is my favorite canyd bar, next to butterfingers, and there's a recipe out there on some of the websites for a cake using butterfingers..You can also buy the Heath bar chips in baking section..I don't think it is called exactly that but it comes in a bag like where the cocolate chips are located. Brittle bits or something like that. I like the way you decorated your cake. Looks so yummy..will have to try this! Thanks for sharing the recipe and tuitorial. I swear by Duncan Hines mixes..won't use any other unless I have to.
Betty819 says
If you make the angel food cake mix with crushed pineapple, add a little coconut flavoring to your mix and you'll think you've got a pina colada cake.
