Let all things be done decently and in order. 1 Corinthians 14:40
In this passage God is telling how things should be done in the church. God wanted there to be order. I believe God wants us to have order in our homes. He demonstrated this by the order he established in the family found in Ephesians chapter 5 verses 22-33. The husband wife relationship was to be a picture of Christ and His bride, the church.
God’s word also tells us to give thanks, in everything, for this is his will according to 1 Thessalonians 5:18. I certainly do want to have order in every area of my life and especially my home and I can give thanks for those of you who are contributing to that, by your blog posts on organization, and especially my two daughters who have been organizing their entire homes.
We have been in the process of moving for about ten years, and in September we moved our bodies to a home we purchased ten years ago, which we have used as a summer home. We have not completed that move with our furniture, as of yet. We are in the process of selling our home in another state and until it sells, we will not move all of our furniture.
We have had containers stacked in our garage for seven months and some longer. This week, I decided it was time to start with my closet and the task of sorting through things. What a job!
But it is a job which I am so glad I have started. Thanks to many of you for your inspiration.
So I began by taking everything out of my closet, so my husband could begin working on shelving for it. Then I brought in all the containers (six) from the garage that had clothing in them and sorted through each, deciding what to keep and what to throw away.
There were two containers of shoes that needed to be gone through and to make a place for them.
We bought white shelving boards and brackets to add shelves to my closet. My husband installed five shelves. He also installed a light so I could see better in the closet.
He put three shelves above the hanging clothes bar.
He put two shelves with support bars on the bottom of the closet.
I went to Dollar Tree and bought 32 colorful containers for $1.00 each.
(Not all of them are showing in this picture.)
I bought 20 plastic shoe boxes and 7 larger, white containers to store items in.
Better Homes and Gardens has printable labels, so I took advantage of them, to label each container.
I used my Xyron machine to laminate the labels. If you would like to view the site click here. The labels I used had eight labels to each page.
I then cut them into individual labels, and used a paper punch to put two holes in each label to run a ribbon through, so I could attach the label to the container.
The colorful containers had many holes to chose from to tie the label.
The shoe box containers did not have any holes to attach the label. I tried taping the label with scotch tape, but it would not hold, so my husband used his drill to make two very small holes in the containers, as seen above, to run the ribbon through.
Then I took a picture of each pair of shoes and attached it to my labels with the Xyron machine.
After I got all the containers labeled, it was time to start filling them and placing them on the proper shelves in the closet.
Starting with the top shelf, I filled the white containers with things that were out of season, or less used.
On the next shelf, I put containers with the things that I would need more frequently.
The next shelf was made to fit the boxes of my best shoes that are used more for Sunday, or special occasions.
Next, the hanging clothes. I organized these by hanger colors. (As you can see in the above picture)
Slacks or slack outfits – white hangers.
Skirts an skirt outfits – dark blue hangers
Dresses – light blue hangers
Blouses – green hangers
Jackets – pink hangers
On the bottom three shelves, I used the same color of container for each shelf, to organize further.
The first two shelves were filled with different types of clothing.
Floor level was filled with containers of shoes such as sandals, flip flops, tennis shoes, flats, dress shoes and boots. (everyday footwear)
The picture below is only showing half of the closet
because the doors can only slide to one side or the other.
My husband also put up mirrored doors on this closet. So nice to have floor to, almost, ceiling mirrors, when getting dressed. Here it looks like our bedroom, but you are seeing it through the mirrors. One day I hope to share about my bedroom decor.
.
I am so glad my closet is organized, and I can see what is in every container. There is a lot of storage in this closet, as you can see, I really need it. Hope this will give you some ideas as to what you could do yourself, with the space you have available in your closet. I have been challenged to organize other areas of my house, hope you have as well.
Blessings,
