Making Your Own Sheer Curtains

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

According to this verse glorifying God includes every thing we do, even our eating or drinking. 

Are we self centered or God centered?  I think we can look how we live our life daily and determine within ourselves if we are glorifying God in all we do.  May God help each of us be God centered instead of self centered.

I decided to make Sheer curtains for my Sun Room after realizing what a huge investment I would be making if I purchased them already made.  I needed 12 panels.  (three for each set of windows.)   Each of the four windows in my Sun room has three window a total of nine feet of windows times four which makes 36 feet of windows.

I wanted the curtains to be inset in the windows.

In order to know how much material I would need for the curtains, I measured the length of the opening from the top of the window opening to the bottom of the opening.  I added to that length five inches, for the top casing, which holds the rod, and three inches for the hem at the  bottom of the curtain.

 For 12 panels measuring 58 1/2 inches plus 5 inches times 12 = 762 inches, which equals  21.16 yards needed.  If I had wanted a ruffle above my rod casing I would have added an additional 2 inches for each curtain which would have added 24 more inches of fabric that I needed.   The material I purchased is 60 inches wide. I always buy a little extra in case something unexpected happens.

( If you were making drapes for your windows you will need to measure your window size and add 5 inches for casing and hem.  If you want a ruffle at the top you will need to add 2 more inches to your curtain length)

I like to shop at Jo-Ann Fabrics to buy my material.  I also like that they send out coupons in the mail that you can use in their store or on line.

Most of the time they have a 50% off coupon on one item that is not on sale.   So when ever I want to make curtains or do any major projects with material I use their coupons and get a large saving.

So I decided to buy material and make my own, and save money.  I purchased sheer material from Jo-Ann Fabrics with my coupon for 50% on one regular priced item, which includes one cut of fabric.

I measured 63 and 1/2 inch for each panel and cut it using a cutting board. I cut 12 curtains this size.

After I cut my panels, I serged each end as seen below on my Serger Overlock machine. I did this on all twelve curtains.  (If you don’t have s Serger you can zig zag the raw edge with a regular sewing machine.)

Then I folded the top of the curtain down two inches and pin, as shown in the picture below. Next, I pressed the hem with an iron, on low heat.  This is the casing for the curtain rod to go through.

 Net I sewed the  hem removing the pins as I went.  When I had the top casing hem completed on each curtain, I turned the material  around and folded the bottom up three inches and pinned it.  Next I pressed it with an iron with low heat.  This is the hem for the bottom of the curtains.

 Now I was ready to hang the curtains on the rods.  I put three curtain panels on each 9 foot rod.

Next lift the rod and set one end into the hanger that is already screwed to the wall.

Then screw the other rod holder, with the rod in it, to the wall on the other end of the window, as shown below.

After you get the curtains hung, spread them out evenly on the rods until they cover the entire window, as shown below.

 I really like the way they look, and how they break down on the direct sunlight, yet still let the brightness of the sun come through them.  They give some privacy when desired.

 We so enjoy spending time in this room.  It is so cozy and warm.

I put a 2 inch casing hem on the curtains to make it easier to pull the curtains back,

 thus letting the sun shine incompletely and warm the room. 

This room also has a hot tub to relax in.  We especially enjoy it in the mornings or late at night.

Our children and grandchildren enjoy it as well, when they come for a visit.
