I have always wanted an island in our kitchen but each kitchen we have had has always been two small for one. Our present kitchen is a little larger so we took the table out of it and made us one.
Here is what we did:
We took a wall cabinet that was 36 x 12 inches and painted it.
We attached a decorative side panel shelving.
We made casters to go on the bottom of the cabinet. To make them, cut a 2 x 4 the depth of the cabinet and add your caster to it, front and back, paint it and attach it to your cabinet.
We added some furniture casters to the bottom of the cabinet so we could move the island from place to place. (You could paint your boards before you put the casters on, it would be easier.
Set the island upright.
We added white knobs to match other cabinets in the kitchen.
Drill the holes where you would like the knobs to go and then screw them into place.
We purchased 4 stools so that 4 people could eat at this island.
My husband wants to leave them the natural wood color. I would like to paint them white or red to match my counter tops or cabinets in my kitchen. What do you think?
For the top of our island we put a glass top on it that was 25 inches x 40 inches wide. The glass was 1/4 inch thick. We had the corners rounded. We bought this at a glass cutting place. You can have it cut the size you desire.
It fits just perfect for this island and for the amount of space we have in the area we placed it. .
Update:
A blogger commented on the glass top :The one small thing I see though is that something needs to go under that sheet of glass to support those corners. That 1/4 inch glass is not thick enough to support much weight and it could break. (I know this from my own personal experience) As your family uses the island and gets used to it there will be more and more “things” put on the edges. Just want to see you avoid the accident we had.

So we took her advice and put a support board underneath the glass.
we cut a 24 inches x 39 inches board. It is 5/8 inches thick. We rounded the corners on the board and then painted the board white. We then screwed the board to the cabinet to secure it. We then placed the glass top on it. The glass top comes out one inch all the way around beyond the board.
We added some place mats and napkins and some decorative items on our shelves to make it look more homey.
We are so pleased with the way it turned out. Hope you like it.

Amy, I bought it at a Kraftmaid sale at a fair grounds in Ohio. Kraftmaid Company was about 9 miles from our house and they used to hold a sale at the fair grounds to the public once a year and sale off things at a reasonable price. I got these shelves for only a few dollars. You could probably order one from Kraftmaid.

We made an island years ago from cabinets in a basement apartment for a friend and ceramic tiled the floor around it making it permanent. I love the ideas of the wheels and the decorative shelving on the end!

Great project, but frankly I would remove the glass. I don't think it adds to the island and how many islands do you see with glass? It's an accident waiting to happen.

I've been looking at quite a few DIY kitchen carts/islands in order to get ideas to redo mine. Yours is one of the most original and impressive. Love the all white and the shelves decorated with beautiful items as opposed to appliances. And the stools making it a place to have a snack is really cute. I would say paint them red, deep chocolate, or leave them natural. Cheers.

Just want to add a suggestion of compromise on the issue of the stools. Why not paint the legs and leave the tops natural?
